Billy Blanks is an American martial artist, actor, and fitness personality best known for creating the Tae Bo workout, a fusion of taekwondo and boxing that became a global fitness phenomenon in the 1990s. Blanks began his martial arts training at age 11 and went on to become a seven-time world karate champion, winning over 30 gold medals in international competitions. He also achieved black belts in multiple martial arts disciplines, including taekwondo, karate, and a black sash in Hung Ga kung fu.
In the late 1980s, Blanks developed Tae Bo while running a karate studio in Quincy, Massachusetts. The name "Tae Bo" combines "Tae" from taekwondo and "Bo" from boxing. He later opened a fitness center in Los Angeles to teach his new workout.
